Role of a Police Officer

  • Respond to calls for help;

  • Enforce federal, provincial, and municipal statutes in response to citizens’ complaints;

  • Prepare and process charges under federal, provincial, and municipal statutes;

  • Undertake special assignments;

  • Participate in exciting activities and projects;

  • Help the Service achieve its priorities;

  • Provide testimony in court;

  • All the while, grounding their work in community policing to help improve and maintain the safety, security, and quality of life for Halton residents.

Requirements to Become a Police Officer

  • Be 18+ years old

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada

  • Meet the physical, mental, and medical requirements of the HRPS (Vision and Hearing Requirements here)

  • Possess a valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police certificate (including fitness logs and valid hearing and vision results that meet standard)

  • Possess a Class ‘G’ Driver’s Licence with no more than six demerit points

  • Possess a Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR Level C

  • Have no criminal conviction(s) for which a pardon(s) has/have not been granted

  • Pass a detailed background check that includes security clearance, credit, cyber, and reference checks

  • Be perceived by others as moral and trustworthy

  • Must have graduated from at least four years of secondary school or equivalent

    • Official transcripts and diplomas will be required

    • If education was completed outside of Canada, official proof of equivalency must be obtained. Please refer to the assessment agencies below:

Fitness Requirements

Applicants must pass the Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) test, consisting of two components; the Pursuit-Restraint Circuit; and the 20-Metre Shuttle Run. Both are designed to measure an applicant’s aerobic and anaerobic capacity, as well as muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Passing both components is mandatory in order to advance to the interview stage.

    1. Checklist and application for Uniform Position: Constable
    2. High School Diploma and Transcripts (include equivalency certificate if required)
    3. Post-Secondary Diploma and Transcripts (include equivalency certificate if required)
    4. Driver’s Licence
    5. Proof of citizenship (birth certificate, passport, PR)
    6. Emergency or Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C” certificates (must rem.in valid through the application/selection process)
    7. Valid OACP certificate, OACP waiver, vision and hearing results and fitness logs

  • Pre-Interview Questionnaire (PIQ): If you are successful through the application screening process, you will be asked to complete an electronic Pre-Interview Questionnaire (PIQ). Your PIQ will be reviewed by a Recruiting Officer who will determine whether you will advance to the next stage.

    Fitness Test: If your PIQ is successful, you will move onto the Fitness Testing portion of the selection process. All applicants must pass the Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) test, consisting of two components; the Pursuit-restraint Circuit and the 20-Metre Shuttle Run.

    Local Focus Interview (LFI): Passing the fitness test moves you to the LFI which is the first of two interviews. The LFI is a one-on-one interview with a Recruiting Officer that helps us learn more about you and your suitability to become a Halton Police Officer.

    Essential Competencies Interview (ECI): If moved to the ECI stage, you will be invited to meet with a panel of two Recruiting Officers for a behavioural-style interview where you will be asked competency-based questions that will assess your knowledge, skills and abilities in relation to policing.

    Psychological Assessment: Successful ECI applicants will be asked to complete an online psychological questionnaire and subsequent interview with our psychologist.

    Background Investigation: The next stage in the selection process involves a designated Background Investigator who conducts a thorough check of all the information gathered during the process. This includes but is not limited to references provided, educational documents, employment history, credit and cyber checks, and meeting you and your family during a home visit. During this stage, you will also be required to complete a medical assessment.

    Final Selection Report: All the information gathered during the process is summarized and submitted for review. Successful applicants will be presented an Offer of Employment.

    Ontario Police College (OPC): As a condition of employment, successful new recruits must attend the 12-week Basic Constable Training course at OPC.
